In this post I reflect on the importance of using your gifts in building confidence and share my personal experiences that have fed into writing this second Confident Rhymers book.
Confident Rhymers – Use Their Gifts
Confident Rhymers “Use Their Gifts” is the second book of the seven-part series designed to boost the confidence and self-esteem of young children, written in conjunction with the Canterbury Christian School’s Work Trust (CCSWT).
This book aims to encourage children who may feel shy and think that they have little to offer, reinforcing that they already have so many wonderful gifts to share and celebrate.
Inspired by my wife
This story has been inspired by my beautiful wife as she doesn’t always realise just how many special gifts and talents she has and I love to see her using them. Many of the gifts she has are also ones that she doesn’t always see as gifts, such as her gentleness, being a wonderful listener, kind and patient. They are gifts that the world may not always shout about, but are ones that I value far more and I am so fortunate to be the recipient of.
The character Ore for this story has been created to look a little like my wife and has been given a similar quiet, encouraging, gentle personality.

At the start of this story Ore describes herself as “Ore the Unsure”, a name given to her by others at school. Yet despite this uncertainty she is willing to try to help Mubble Pup with the gifts he needs to deliver. This is one of the central themes of the book that even though you may not feel like you are able to help much, if you’re willing to give it a try you may well surprise yourself and discover new talents along the way.
Wonderful Gifts
As Ore takes physical gifts to five of The Rhymers she displays some wonderful gifts of her own – being a great ideas person, listener, problem solver, encourager and comforter.
Moment of Challenge
Scary is challenged when he receives his gift of a jar of sweets with the label “Share, don’t scare.” Eden is using this gift as an opportunity for Scary to reflect upon his character and the choices he makes.
Share Your Gifts
In the climax to the story we see Eden delighting in sharing in the gifts he has given each. Every gift has been chosen carefully by him to fit with their particular personality. Most of all Eden wants everyone to share the gifts he has given them and not to keep their talents hidden.
