Numbers Learning

The Rhymers’ series is branching out into providing numerous early learning resources. The latest addition to this is the release of the Rumber Rhymers title where The Rumbers, Rhyme Island’s loveable number characters introduce themselves in their own book. This post gives you a glimpse into this book, the rationale behind it and details of where you can find it.

Introducing The Rumbers

The Rumbers are Rhyme Island’s number characters that live happily alongside their alphabet friends. They already appear in each of The Rhymers’ books through numbering the pages and interacting with what is happening in each story. I have really enjoyed illustrating each of these interactions, providing great opportunities for humour. When sharing my books with children they love spotting what The Rumbers are up to on each page. I believe it is one of the strengths of my series that it enables children to see different things each time they read my books.

The idea for the Rumber Rhymers’ book

For a while now I have wanted The Rumbers to have their own book, but have been unsure as where to set it. Then a few months ago I hit upon the idea of them living in Rhyme Jungle. A jungle complimented beautifully the greens of the number characters and allowed me the backdrop for some gorgeous colours within the illustrations. I also wanted to give them a special place to live that was different from the rest of the island featured in my other books.

Educational rationale

The aims of this book is to be colourful, fun and educational on many levels. As well as the obvious number learning, there are simple rhymes on each page to help children with their reading. Children also have the opportunity to see how the number words are spelt, aided by each of The Rising Rhymer characters appearing to spell the appropriate number word. There are also many things to spot and count that correspond to the correct number for that page.

Running through each of the early learning books is the concept of time. Each story begins at sunrise and ends with the sun setting. On page 8 of the Rumber Rhymers book there is the addition of a clock to show the time is 8pm and that the summer sun will be setting soon.

At the end of the book there are two double-pages to recap and reinforce the numbers learning. I particularly like the colourful spread of the objects or characters that can be counted for each number, as illustrated below.

The vision for the Rumber Rhymers title is that it is a numbers learning book that will grow with the child at each stage of their early years development. It is also intended to be shared with siblings, as younger and older children can each engage with different elements of the book.
