Creatives Spotlight:
Malcolm Buller
Malcolm was born in the London suburbs just after the Second World War as the youngest of four boys. His chosen career was in primary school teaching and at Coventry College of Education met Joan. They married in 1971 and have two sons. Since 1978 they have lived in Staplehurst, Kent where they are both fully immersed in village life, founding Staplehurst Interest Group in 2002.
Retirement gave new opportunities and writing blossomed, but it was during the 2020 lockdown that real impetus came to focus on hobbies. Living a short distance from Leeds Castle gave them a wonderful location for exercise and stimulus for many pieces of writing.
His first poetical miscellany ‘What’s In The Box?‘ contained many examples from his teaching days as well as modern poems reflecting the times. Humour plays an important part of Malcolm’s personality and his poetry reflects this.
He then turned to a first novel which follows the fortunes of naïve teenagers in 1960s London. ‘Parallel Lies‘ explores whether untold truths can be as affecting as untruths. Each character develops as they follow their own story, intertwined with each other’s.
After publication of those in Autumn 2020, he began writing ‘Leeds Castle – A Poetic Tour‘ capturing feelings of place and time as visitors journey through the grounds and castle. Its nine hundred years’ history ensures a wealth of material and it deserves its title of ‘the loveliest castle in the world’.
His second novel, ‘Sitting in the Memory’, was published early in 2023. It explores how seemingly trivial events can surface years later, deeply affecting the lives of family members. Why was she found sitting in a stream?
Being fully immersed in the life of this rural village has brought Malcolm into contact with many fascinating people who have many tales to tell. ‘Listening Lines – Staplehurst Stories’ has been written from the words of fifty individuals, from ten to over ninety years of age, who all are, or have been, residents of this Kent village. There are many links between them and over a hundred photographs add understanding of the history of people, places and events.
Malcolm enjoys sharing his work with others and is a regular public speaker at local groups. You can book him through this website and Andrew will ensure the message is passed to him.
